An actor’s life: interview with Simone Douani
Simone Douani is an actor, singer, director, voice over talent and life coach, based in London since 2009.
What is your role in the theatre industry and why did you choose it?
I am an Italian actor, singer and director. I am rather versatile as an actor and I have experience in comic and dramatic roles, in musical productions and in cabaret shows where you can find a fusion of acting and singing. I have been performing both in Italy and in the UK, where I am established.
Theatre and cinema have been always my passion. Since I was a child, I always wanted to become a performer so I just pursued my dream and here I am.
I recently co-founded NIAL (Native Italian Actors in London), together with Anna Elena Pepe, Alessandro De Marco e Sara Laratro. It’s the first directory that lists Native Italian actors based in London, who are fluent both in English and Italian.
I’m also a life coach, working both in Italy and in the UK.
What’s your background? And do you think it’s necessary to have a specific degree for this job?
I strongly believe that to do any profession, it is necessary to have the proper qualifications plus adequate training. However, in acting and the performing arts having a degree is not enough. The training is very important and an actor’s never ends. And that’s also why it is such a fantastic job. There is always something new to learn.
When did you decide to work in the theatre industry? And what, in your opinion, is the best age to start?
As I mentioned earlier, I had this strong passion for the theatre since I was child. So I started my training straight after the secondary school. My personal opinion is that the sooner you start, the better. Children are natural actors. This inclination can be helped to mature into a professional actor.
Is a Spotlight account essential, particularly when getting an agent?
Being a Spotlight member is essential if you’d like to work as an actor in the UK. It gives you more credibility as a professional actor, and it’s also important if you need to find an agent.
What’s the best way to get noticed and achieve professional representation?
The best way to get noticed is to use reliable social media and to work with colleagues that share the same passion and that are as driven as you are. One must get involved in good quality and artistically interesting projects.
The best way to achieve results in the performing arts world, in my opinion, is to be always proactive and never wait for the “One” telephone call.
Any advice for a young person wanting to break into the theatre business?
If you feel that this is something really important in your life, then go for it! Nothing could stop you from achieving what you desire in life.
What’s the best way to get tuition and gain some experience?
Best way is to look around. There are many schools all around the world, and especially in London.
Try to talk to as many people as you can, and then find the one that is most suitable for you.
